Winter is well and truly here.
The grass has stopped growing until spring, and the chances are that your garden, lawn care or groundcare machinery is sitting, in storage, in a shed somewhere - out of sight and out of mind until you need it again.
But come the spring, when the grass once again begins to grow, you’ll need every piece of equipment operating to its full capacity, which is why here at Balmers GM we can't stress enough just how important regular machinery servicing is!
And we know that during peak months, it is seen as a pain or a hassle to have a critical piece of equipment out for several days while maintenance is conducted. That is why we feel, along with garden and ground care machinery owners up and down the country, that winter servicing is the best way to prepare for the year ahead.
It doesn't matter whether it is lawn care, garden, or ground-care machinery, if it works hard, it will need looking after, and lack of maintenance will not only reduce its performance but could also potentially dramatically reduce its lifespan.
Here at Balmers GM, we offer garden and groundcare machinery servicing during the winter months, that will ensure that your equipment runs at its best, right when you need it the most.
What is Winter Servicing?
Winter servicing is very simple, all it is is your regular servicing but done in winter, probably the most convenient time for you, as the chances are you need your machinery much less frequently.
As a bare minimum, you should service all machinery at least once a year, although this should be done more frequently if the machine sees a lot of use. So, winter servicing is a great way of getting your main service done at a time when you need your machine the least.
Typically, a full winter service will include the following, but please note this can differ from machine to machine:
- A full engine service, including an oil change, filter change and potentially changing the spark plugs. (Please be aware at Balmers we only use genuine replacement parts and lubricants)
- Old fuel is replaced, as this can go stale during the long winter months.
- Blades are removed, cleaned, and sharpened.
- All belts and cables are inspected and are replaced if required.
- Testing of all safety features and operating controls.
- Cleaning of the deck to prevent corrosion during the damp winter months.
- Followed by a general inspection for any other major or minor faults.
Our checks are carried out by expert, experienced, factory trained technicians, who will notify you of any potential issues and advise the best course of action.

Sharpening and Cylinder Regrinds
Once you’ve cut your grass, you should be left with an even cut, as soon as you start to see a rougher, less even cut, then you know it's time to sharpen your blades again. That is why we recommend a full relief grind during downtime in the winter months. We’ll do this as we service your machine, pretty convenient right? This involves reducing the contact area of the cutting edges by forming an angle, what we call a relief angle, through grinding.
Not only does this ensure a longer lifespan for the parts, but it can actually help you use less fuel, lower the engine load, and decrease the amount of hydraulic power needed!
We’re well aware that during the course of the year, even after a full relief grind, that is why we highly recommend a mid-season spin grind to keep your blades in top cutting condition throughout the duration of the year. This takes less time, so you’ll be back out mowing in next to no time!
